Unless you’ve been living in a cave, you will be aware that there is an upcoming general election – and an important one at that. For the first time in a long time, our parliament could change completely.
Everyone’s talking about it, tweeting about it, blogging about it… but what if you just don’t understand it?
For many people, and young people in particular, this might just be the case. The Wham Bam Strawberry Jam! team visited St. Mary’s Preparatory School in Lincoln, and spoke to several children who wanted to learn more about the election and other events happening around the world – on their terms. “I’d like to have a kid-friendly news,” said one pupil, “so that we all understand it, and know what’s going on.”
Some young people, on the other hand, are already politically involved. Liam Young, 14, is a member of the Youth Parliament (MYP). He gets to attend meetings in Parliament and make important decisions about the services available to children and teenagers across Lincoln.
Brooke Charlesworth sat down with her pet mouse, Debs, to explain to children how the election works and how they can make a difference before they turn 18.
