Head2Head Episode 3: Dropping ‘Apu’ from The Simpsons

Episode 3 of Head2Head focuses the discussion this week on the situation with Apu.

Beloved Simpsons character Apu Nahasapeemapetilon has become the topic of scrutiny in the last week again for being a racist depiction of Indian culture. As The Simpsons enters its 29th year on television it’s been a mostly harmonious experience, entertaining fans consistently for nearly three decades but not anymore.

Perhaps in more recent years the shows fan base has diminished and some critics are putting it down to a change in society and PC culture.

Hari Kondabolu’s comedy documentary was one of the first to draw mainstream attention to the problem with Apu. He said the character has tormented him throughout his life as a representation of his culture that is racist and harmful.

This week the characters voice actor, Hank Azaria, discussed the possibility of removing the character from the show in an interview with Jimmy Kimmel.

So watch Steph Ball and Aaron Lees get into another debate this time about stereotypes in cartoons and comedy. Featuring Riggidy Riggidy Will and Craig Palmer.
