British Heart Foundation Raise Thousands In Charity Match

British Heart Foundation raised over £3,000 for the charity after a charity match that featured former Lincoln City players.

Ashby Avenue, home of Lincoln United, played host to the Peter Burr Memorial Cup with British Heart Foundation FC (BHF FC) and a team of Lincoln City legends including former City Midfielder Terry Fleming, brothers Mark and Danny Hone and goalkeeper Barry Richardson.

On April 6 last year BHF FC played the University of Lincoln social football team who helped raise just £2,197 with £800 raised on the night. This year the British Heart Foundation earned £3,050 with the help of 510 fans filling Ashby Avenue.

Match organiser, and son of Peter whom the match is in honour of, Gary Burr said: “Nearly 3 years ago my dad died of a heart attack so i wanted to do something in his memory and we both love football so I just thought I’d set up a charity football match, and that’s what i did and its gone really well.”

Trevor Swinburne, chair of the Lincoln City former players association, was part of the reason that the Lincoln City Legends got involved, Gary said: “I’ve known Trevor for a couple of years and we just

thought lets get a game on.” He continued: “I think we had 16 ex-players so really great for Lincoln (City) supporting and a lot of City fans came down tonight so it’s fantastic.”

A former player who featured for the Legends was Terry Fleming, he played over 180 times for City during 1995-2000 and also spent 5 years with United, including a 2 year stint as club manager. speaking of the match, Terry said: “i’m in contact with the guys at Lincoln City, Trevor contacted me via email and asked me if I would be interested in playing and like i said if i’m available, i’ll always make myself available to play.” He continued: ” its a fantastic occasion to play, meet some of the boys you haven’t seen for a while and obviously its for a great cause as well.”
