A Lincoln councillor who started running his own litter-picking sessions says he has been delighted by just how many volunteers have been getting involved.
Councillor Martin Christopher – who represents the city’s Abbey ward – began organising the community events earlier this year after being astonished by the amount of rubbish he saw while on walks with his young children in Hartsholme Country Park.
Now, he says he’s been wowed by the number of people who have joined him while out cleaning the streets of his ward. At one event – in the Glebe Park area – some 55 parents and children turned up. In total, he has given out 84 free litter picking kits to volunteers wanting to help out.
The 46-year-old father-of-two, who has been a councillor for three years, said: “The main reason I do this isn’t for me but for the person who will walk after me in 15 minutes time. I want [a clean area] to be a hidden gift for those people.”
The Lib Dem said his political grouping had supported this initiative. “We wanted to highlight that we aren’t afraid of getting our hands dirty.”
