The Lincoln landmark’s application is part of the Lincoln Cathedral Connected project, which aims to encourage more people to visit the attraction.

The world famous attraction is vying for the prize against other historical sites from around the UK, including Nottingham Castle.

Caroline Williams is the funding development officer for Lincoln Cathedral. She says the money would be spent improving activity facilities for visitors.

“Our aim is to engage the visitors and enhance the visitor experience by getting them involved in activities and events.”

The improvements would include more space to wander round, a larger coffee shop and pedestrianising the west front of the cathedral.

“Really it’s about having more places for people to relax with their family and friend and improving the experience for our visitors.”

If successful, the work would commence in 2016 and would take approximately five years.
