Councils and businesses battle cyber criminals as the number of attacks rise

Lincolnshire County Council has faced daily attacks from hackers and viruses with several organisations across the country losing thousands of pounds due to cyber criminals.

According to a national survey by Hiscox, 53% of small to medium businesses across the UK have been the victim of a cyber attack in the last year.

The latest Audit report for the Lincolnshire County Council, they said that cybercrimes were one of the main threats to the organisation.

Lincolnshire County Councillor for Highways, Transport and IT, Richard Graham Davies, says that the threat is an increasing issue amongst many councils.

“There has been many councils across the country that have suffered from a variety of different cyber attacks that have had big consequences.

“We face cyber-attacks every day on our systems with our team working constantly to make sure everyone’s data safe and secure.”

Sigma Cyber Security are a Lincolnshire based IT company that help organisations protect themselves from online attacks.

Communications Officer, John Thompson, says many companies don’t have the security in place to stop attacks.

“A lot of our clients are relying on our services daily to protect their systems from the high levels of hacking, phishing, malware attacks etc.”

The Office for National Statistics reveal that over a third of UK businesses now use a hybrid model as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.

The increase in online working has led to 82% of UK businesses labelling cyber security as a ‘very high’ priority in 2022 with an increase from 77% in 2021.

The average cost of a cyber breach for large businesses in 2022 was £8,040 with smaller businesses averaging a £1,200 loss in an attack.
