Figures show Lincolnshire County Council has spent almost a quarter of a million pounds on Christmas lights and decorations in the last five years, amid a cost-of-living crisis.

Between 2020 and 2024, the authority splurged £228,271 on festive illuminations and other adornments, according to its own figures.

The biggest outlay came in 2023 when it splashed £76, 755 on lights, and £1,325 on decorations; and in 2024 when it spent £44, 206 on more lights.

In 2022, it laid out £33, 771 on lights, and £3,270 on decorations.

The revelations have led to criticism during a cost-of-living crisis that has seen many families across the region struggling to make end’s meet.

Marian Foster, coordinator of Let Them Eat Cake, a not-for-profit group who help and support the homeless and those struggling to feed themselves said: “An awful amount of money is spent over the Christmas decorations.

“While I agree we should celebrate the birth of Christmas and pass the tradition onto our extended family, it would be nice if there is some consideration for those that are homeless, lonely, or struggling for food, never mind Christmas.”

Let Them Eat Cake looks to tackle food poverty and have recently opened Nite Bite Cafe in October, where they provide meals and supplies for those struggling, and will be open on Christmas Day.

According to the BBC, in 2023, £140,000 was also spent by the City of Lincoln Council upgrading Christmas decorations.

Lincolnshire County Council has been contacted for a response.
