Research from the University of Lincoln has shown that people spend a third of the time they are awake on their phones. People were found to look at their phones around 85 times a day according to new research.

The app was developed for an  exploratory study to compare the amount of time participants estimated they spent on their smartphones compared with how much time they actually spent on their phones.

The app was developed by PhD psychology student Heather Shaw along with her research partner Libby-Rae Kendrick from the university. They created the app using an online app builder. Heather Shaw said ” We came up with the study to see how long people spent on their phones. We wanted to see if people had any idea of how long they were spending on their phones.”

23 participants aged between 18-33 downloaded the app onto their phone, and it recorded how much time they actually spent using their phone over a two week period.

Activities which counted towards the research included looking at the time, checking notifications and looking at social media apps.

These students at the University of Lincoln told LSJ News that results of the study were not surprising.
