Opinion: The J-name curse is real – I’m avoiding them at all costs (sort of)

From Mr Big to Jacob Black, are boys whose names begin with J a walking red flag?

Have you ever wondered why we never got to find out Mr Big’s name in Sex and the City until the very final scene of the original series? Did you notice that? How they kept it hidden from us until the end.

Well, I have a theory why. It’s because it began with a J.

John. He was the original J-name curse.

If you’ve not heard of this, it’s an online theory that boys whose name starts with a J – Joe, James, ugh Joseph – are inherently bad for you. They are a walking red flag. Just avoid them. Or, if you’re already involved with one: run! These are not guys who make for good situationships, relationships or anything in between.

Now, I’m not necessarily saying all boys with names beginning with J are terrible. I’m sure some are sweet. Like take my roommate Iris – her boyfriend is lovely.

But I’m pretty sure there’s not a girl alive who’s not had a horrid experience with a guy whose name begins with J. And if you haven’t, yours is probably still to come.

Why are they bad? Where do I start? They’re obsessed with your for two weeks they’re obsessed and then suddenly change their minds because “they’re not ready for anything serious”. They then tell you all the excuses of why it’s not going to work – but they still want to be your friend. I mean, what? Alarm bells are ringing. There’s a reason Bella didn’t end up with Jacob in Twilight – and it’s not just because Edward could sparkle in the sun.

I didn’t always believe in this J-name curse – until I encountered one myself. I thought surely all the TikToks were wrong. And then I met my very own – and what a roller-coaster that was. Or, to be more accurate, what a roller-coaster it is.

So, congratulations to you if you’ve had to deal with a guy whose name begins with J. You’re like Carrie Bradshaw: a J-name survivor, and you should be proud of it.
