Students volunteer in the community

Students across the country have been giving up their free time this week to help out their local community.

Today marks the last day of National Student Volunteering Week 2012, a campaign started by Volunteering England which has been running for 11 years. The theme for this year is ‘Back to Basics: Community Roots’, getting students to take part in community projects.

According to a major study 63% of surveyed students reported formally volunteering since they had started university, and gave just over 3 million hours to communities in the 2009/10 academic year

Lincoln has been doing its bit, with events being held by the University’s Student Union through the week. Volunteers have been knitting hats for premature babies, walking rescue dogs from the RSPCA, and decorating Hartsholme Cricket Club.
