Students’ work to feature on catherdral scaffolding

The scaffolding around the North West turret at Lincoln Catherdral will feature art students work for at least two years.

As part of an ongoing refurbishment of the cathedral, the two turrets at the front are being restored. The other turret, the South West, had work started on it three years ago. A consequence of this meant that scaffolding and very large hoarding had to be put up for building workers, making an unsightly entrance. The Cathedral decided that in order to get back its reputation for an eye for detail, it would put up a huge photo of Lincoln from St Hugh’s view over the scaffolding.

And now it’s time to refurbish the second turret, the North West. Again, large hoarding has been put up and the Cathedral doesn’t want it to spoil the beautiful aesthetics. This time, an idea to incorporate students work and also to help gain funding for the cathedral from farming and food industries has been set in motion.

Andrea Green, from the Funding Development Office at the cathedral kickstarted the idea to make the scaffolding more attrative and to invlove people from the community.

The art students are currently thinking about what images they want to create, with some even being graphic design. Once the designs have been drafted, the cathedral will have to approve the drawings so that they are appropriate. The montage of food and farming images will remain up on the hoarding for at least two years and possibly three.
