Extinction Rebellion Lincoln has vowed to continue protesting in the city centre until high street bank Barclays stops financing fossil fuel projects.

The environmental group held a demonstration outside the Lincoln branch, in High Street, on Saturday.

The group held a banner outside the bank which said “Barclays – Killing our Future”, gave out leaflets and demanded customers change banks.

Members said they have previously been arrested for chaining themselves inside the bank.

Rosemary Robinson, Extinction Rebellion spokesperson, said: “I’m disappointed and cross that Barclays continues to invest in fossil fuels despite our protests.

“We are going to continue to do this. It’s part of our campaign to get Barclays to stop investing in fossil fuels.

“They are knowingly and recklessly driving the climate crisis and environmental devastation.”

The protest comes after Rainforest Action Network found that Barclays was the largest financier of fossil fuel projects in Europe and invested more than $24 billion in 2023.

Extinction Rebellion Lincoln was launched in 2018 in response to the climate crisis and has more than 60 members.

Protestor Pheobie Shaft said: “We will continue until we get a response. We’re having a lot of reaction from customers.

“I think people are aware of the climate crisis and it’s worrying them.”

A Barclays spokesperson told LSJ News: “As a UK-centred leader in global finance, we are supporting our clients and customers in their transition to real world decarbonisation, by helping to mobilise finance for low-carbon solutions and climate tech, alongside financing existing oil and gas and power clients, for energy security and reliability.”
