Sections of Lincoln High Street will be closed over the coming weekend, forcing up to 48 hours of traffic diversions.

This disruption will allow construction work to begin on the Lincoln High Street Footbridge on 9 March 2015.

Cars travelling northbound between St Marks Street and Wigford Way will be diverveted along Brayford Wharf East.

Traffic travelling southbound will turn left from St Mary’s and those from Wigford Way are to be diverted around the island car park to join the High Street.

These safety measures are to be impleted due to the expected high level of pedestrians over the weekend.

The road closures are meant to come into place at around 8pm on Saturday 7 March and run through Sunday 8 March.

Throughout this time, there will be a temporary re-configrations of the junctions on Wigford Way and St Marks Street – as well as a vast amount of changes to traffic signals and road markings.

Once complete, the new footbridge will improve accessibility for pedestrians, who are often delayed by the level crossing. The project, which is organised and funded by Lincolnshire County Council, is planned to be completed by the end of February 2016.

The development project is deemed of great importance, despite there already being crossings at High Street and Brayford Wharf East. According to Lincolnshire County Council “both record such significant levels of misuse that they are ranked first and third on the risk register for the East Coast and East Midlands route”.
