A wildlife charity is looking for Lincolnshire volunteers to help support national conservation efforts.
The People’s Trust for Endangered Species specialises in wildlife conservation and has relaunched the Living with Mammals survey.
The survey asks people to monitor and record wild mammals in urban areas during the spring to summer months.
David Wembridge is a researcher at the charity and is coordinating the survey. He said: “Mammals are often out in unsocial hours so monitoring them is almost impossible without the help of volunteers.”
Places such as local parks and gardens can be home to bats, badgers, foxes and hedgehogs.
Volunteers are asked to note down any sightings of mammals, mammal droppings, footprints or food supplies.
Wembridge added: “It’s so important to remain patient. Mammals aren’t noisy like birds, they do their best not to be seen.
“I think people will be surprised at how many mammals exist in urban areas. But the truth is, nature gets in and uses whatever it can.”
Alex Foxley-Wood is head of the Nature Positive Lincoln scheme which encourages biodiversity in the city.
She said: “A lot of our wildlife is critically struggling at the moment. Hedgehogs in the UK have declined by 30 per cent in urban areas.
“There is so much that your local community and you yourself can do for local wildlife.
“Sometimes you can feel a little bit on your own fighting for nature, but I’ve spoken to people who have got these absolutely mad gardens that they’ve created for butterflies or maybe they’ve made a hedgehog highway.
“Little actions can have big effects.”
