With contemporary dance gaining more and more notoriety, LSJ reporters decided to look deeper at Lincoln’s underground dance scene.

With a large break dancing competition at Tokyo nightclub on Monday 12th of March, Max Pettifer joined a local dance group whilst they warmed up before the competition and then accompanied them to the club to document the action.

The group, formed of four members, Kid Crux, Bob, Miles and Valentina, practice in their living room where they have fashioned a dance floor with polished wood and vinyl. There they can practice their art form for hour, before setting off for the competition.

By eleven at night the club was starting to fill with both dancers and a large audience. With an area of the dance floor safely roped off. The audience gave increasingly energetic cheers and support for the competitors who performed ever more creative and technical routines.

As the rounds progressed competitors began to drop out until finally there were only two, the dancer Kid Crux and Martin the winner of the last big comp. After a tiring final standoff, the winner was chosen by popular vote, and this time Martin took the crowd by storm.

As he received the £100 cash prize, the dancers all celebrated a good competition and took to the floor together to enjoy the rest of their night.
