‘More of the same’: Sleaford Town manager looks to build on win in bid to survive relegation

Sleaford Town manager Matt Evans is hoping to use the momentum from the hard-fought victory against Ashby Ivanhoe last Saturday to move further away from relegation, he has said.

The Greens will strive to build on the win to achieve another three points when they play Melton Town FC this Saturday.

Evans said: “It will be much more of the same, as I said to the lads, you can’t go out and put all of that effort in and then a week later not reproduce those sorts of levels.”

Evans also light-heartedly said the “stars must have aligned” for attacker Andrew Whalon to have opened his scoring account for the side and can possibly bring this form forward into the next game.

The manager also said: “He’s learning, he’s getting better all the time and that’s what we want to do, we want to develop a home-grown player from the local area, but he does need to score more goals.

“It’s about bloody time, we’ve had a good laugh and joke about it the last couple of weeks and you know he wants to score, he wants to improve.”

Sleaford broke the deadlock, as Whalon found the back of the net in the 59th minute as he capitalised on a bouncing ball in the box which Ashby Ivanhoe’s defence were unable to deal with.

Whalon was understandably happy about the result and his goal but said: “Next week we need another three points, my first goal so need to get another next week, maybe even two goals.”

The defence remained strong to hold off for their ninth clean sheet of the season despite heavy pressure from the opposition in the first half.

A key factor which Evans alluded to as being “our twelfth man” in the second half was the strong winds which was causing many problems for both teams when playing into the gusts.

With four games left in the season, each and every game now proves to be vital for survival for the Greens.
