A new paper has been released today in the hope to retain print among daily national newspapers. The ‘New Day’ newspaper is the first stand-alone national newspaper that has been released in the last 30 years.

The new daily paper was created by Trinity Mirror, creators of the Daily and Sunday Mirror, and is edited by the Mirrors weekend editor Alison Phillips. The paper is aimed at those who no longer read newspapers and claims to be ‘politically neutral.’

With newspapers posting more content online, sales over the next few years, could continue to decrease. Since the start of 2016, the Daily Mail, which is the UK’s most popular print and online newspaper, have reported a 20% fall in print revenues.

Nigel Devereux, a journalism lecturer, at the University of Lincoln is sceptical about the New Day’s success, he said: “I’m not convinced that it will be a success,” said Nigel. “Trinity Mirror seem to feel that with the right product they can tempt around 1 million readers that have been lost to print additions over the past year.”

Mr Devereux’s speculation on the success of the paper is not an uncommon one. A national readership survey revealed on their January 2015 – December 2015, that there had been a 237% increase in print received by digital. This is a huge increase and proves the ever rising popularity of online news.

Mr Devereux agreed that more and more people are reading news online, he said: “Most people now get their news online and I think newspapers do have to offer something different, so if they do that then they may succeed, but I am not convinced that they will.”

Even though the paper does not have an online edition, you can see what they are Tweeting about @thenewdayuk
