New indoor kitchen bins are being delivered to residents across Lincoln this week as part of a new waste collection initiative.
The five litre caddies – along with 52 liners – will be distributed to all residents to dispose of their food waste.
Biffa, the City of Lincoln Council’s waste contractor, started delivering caddies to households on Monday.
The scheme aims to reduce the amount of food waste thrown away in general waste bins. A quarter of Lincolnshire’s general waste is made up from food.
The scheme also comes as part of a county-wide initiative which required all councils in England to separately collect food waste.
Councillor Rebecca Longbottom, portfolio holder with responsibility for waste management, said: “By separating it, we can turn it into something useful, generating green energy and fertiliser,”
Food waste collection begin on March 30, with residents told to not start using their caddies until a week before.
