Opinion: Beans mixed with tuna? Trust me, it works

Weird food combinations may sound a bit ugh - but they can be ground breaking creations, insists Marmite-loving Molly Brammall

If you’ve ever worried about being seen as weird – and not in a good way – I suggest reading on in hopes that, like me, you can learn to embrace your messed up qualities. I mean, after all, the first step is admitting them.

Here’s my question: why should I, for the sake of other people, confine my food choices and stick with tradition?

I’m tired of pretending I don’t mix random things together in the hope of discovering a ground-breaking creations. I’m coming clean. Baked beans. Mayonnaise. Together? Oh yes. Just trust me.

I stumbled across this combination while innocently tucking into a plate of chips, nuggets and beans, completely unaware of what I was about to uncover. My lifelong obsession with mayonnaise gave me no option but to stick a huge dollop on the side- purely for the chips. However, the lack of space on the plate alongside my lazy application led to the sauce being shoulder to shoulder with the beans.

I thought nothing of it. But what happened next was revolutionary.

A forkful of beans, coated in a glaze of mayonnaise was enough to make me want to bin everything else on the plate. Without sounding dramatic, stumbling across this combination changed my life and from this day on, baked beans and mayonnaise are no longer separate foods to me. They come as a wonderfully weird pair.

The baked bean theme does not stop there.

I know this might provoke a look of disgust – it usually does – but when tucking into your rather ordinary jacket potato, instead of segregating the beans and the tuna- the way the nation unanimously deemed appropriate – try mixing them. I dare you.

Wild I know, but beans and tuna provide a sort of hot and cold slice of heaven.

Another one? Beans on toast- English tradition. I understand not fixing something that isn’t broken, but smack a layer of Marmite onto the bread – or peanut butter if you’re feeling fancy – and you’ll never look back.

I suppose by reveling in these food combinations, I too could be considered weird. But, then, I’d much rather be a bit weird than a lot boring.

And if you disagree I’d probably put money on your favourite packet of crisps being ready salted.
