For many young people in Lincoln, politics may not be the most exciting topic or even something that bothers them in the slightest.

However, Lincoln Labour candidate Lucy Rigby believes that the voting age should be re-assessed to allow sixteen year olds a voice.

Rigby explained that “it may seem a bit odd at first when you think with sixteen year olds, they’re not that mature, should they really be given the vote?  But then you think look, they can become a director of a company,  they pay taxes, they can get married, they can join the army.

“So, are we really saying that people who can do all of those things and for me taxes is the big one. You can pay taxes but you can’t vote? No, for me more young people involved in politics.”

Rigby also expressed her concern at the quality of education under 16’s are recieving at school regarding politics.

“Not only do I think that more young people should vote and we should be engaging with young people, but I also think citizenship education in schools needs to be hugely, hugely beefed up.”
