Lincoln Castle and the Magna Carta Vault are the winners of an award at the British Guild of Travel Writers’ annual tourism awards.

The Castle won the Best UK Tourism Award at a awards dinner in London at the Savoy Hotel. The project, which opened on April 12015 competed alongside tourism projects from around the world.

Each project that was nominated had been completed within the last three years and was selected via a secret ballot of the Guilds 270 professional journalists, writers, photographers and bloggers.

The guild members evaluated the project based on tourism potential and its benefits to the local community.

The new and improved castle has received a huge interest from the public after its £22 million overhaul, welcoming more than 200,000 visitors since its completion, nearly doubling its expected target of 110,000 set by the Lincolnshire County Council.

The event was sponsored by the Development Fund of Armenia and the preceding champagne reception was hosted by France’s Pas-de-Calais Tourism.

Jon Hogan, Events and Marketing Manager at the Castle said: “The Travel Writers award is quite significant because they write and inform others, so it’s not just an award in its own right to say we have a great attraction, but it’s being able to send that message out to lots and lots of different people”
