Championship Challenger: Alex Lowes.

British Superbike star Alex Lowes said he’s confident of clinching his maiden title at Brands Hatch this weekend.

The championship is poised for a thrilling climax, with the Lincoln rider trailing standings leader Shane ‘Shakey’ Byrne by just one point.

“I feel confident, I’m going to do my absolute best, the bike works well here and I’ve had a good run of form in the 2nd half of the season, so I feel we can definitely take it to Shakey,” said Lowes following Friday practice.

Lowes’ Samsung Honda went quickest in wet conditions during first practice, but had to settle for second in the afternoon session as Byrne topped the timesheets.

Byrne who’s competing in his 10th season in the formula, knows how to handle the end of season pressure having won three British Superbike Championship crowns before.

However Lowes, 23, is in just his 2nd superbike season, but said he won’t be intimidated by his rival’s illustrious record:

“Obviously he’s got the advantage of having been in that position before, but I don’t feel like it’s going to affect me.

“So I’m going to do my best, and if he’s going to beat me, he’s going to have to work really really hard to do that, and that’s all I can do, so I’m looking forward to the race,” he added.

Lowes enters the three race showdown at the world famous Brands Hatch circuit in scintillating form. Lowes has won six of the last eight races with recent grand prix stoking the title battle further.

At Assen, Lowes was disqualified after colliding with Byrne who then beat him in a photo-finish at Silverstone.

Lowes however, is eager to bounce-back and said: “To win the championship would mean everything to me as it’s something I’ve dedicated my whole life to.”
