A Lincoln boxer has said that he thinks taking a couple of years out of boxing will do Tyson Fury some good. Fury has reportedly been using cocaine to deal with a bipolar disorder and it has led to him losing two titles and his licence to box.
Lee Swaby who fought Fury in 2009 says time out will be great for the British heavyweight: “The pressure from all governing bodies is quite immense that you have to stick to their timetable, and when you’ve got a lot of belts you’ve got a lot of timetable to keep happy.
I find it quite annoying by the governing bodies, acting like little kids saying, ‘It’s our bat and our ball you can’t play our game’, which is quite sad in such a renowned sporting arena.”
Swaby believes Fury could have taken a smarter path to helping his condition: “He could’ve got aid much better than putting money in the pocket of some drug baron out there.
I knew it was coming, I’m surprised it wasn’t sooner. As I say the pressure is immense, he’s not been in the gym in the past 3 or 4 months and that’s no way to be a world champion.”
