In an electrically-powered blast from the past, the public will once again be able to travel in the oldest existing boat of its kind.
Lincoln’s Mary Gordon is set to be rebuilt and revived, after spending years unused and abandoned at the local Pyewipe Inn.
When the restoration is complete, it is hoped that the boat will carry passengers along the Fossdyke canal, as it did 70 years ago.
First launched sometime between 1890 and 1903, The Mary Gordon is a part of National heritage as the oldest living electrically powered craft in history.
The boat was first brought to Lincoln in 1943, mid World War II, and was used to carry the holidaying public to Saxilby.
Peter Harrold, Chairman of the Mary Gordon Trust is currently attempting to raise money to fulfil one of his life dreams to support the project.
“It’s a personal thing really, I love classic boats and I love wooden boats. I’ve got a shed full of wooden boats that will last me a life-time.”
“This is an important boat. It is a part of the national heritage, not just Lincoln’s.”
It is also essential that a home for the Mary Gordon during its reconstruction process is found as work cannot begin until it is relocated.
“What we need is somewhere to put the boat. It would be a great project to get involved with.”
