Grimsby Town 3-0 Coalville Town
A second half hat trick from Dayle Southwell saw Grimsby Town beat Coalville Town and progress into the second round of the FA trophy where they will face Barnet away. After a 1-1 draw on Saturday at Owen Street both sides contested the replay at Blundell Park in front of a small crowd.
Grimsby Town started the brighter with Sam Hatton and Joe Colbeck both missing the target. The noisy corner of Coalville fans who were in full voice throughout the match gradually helped calm the visitors nerves and the Ravens began to settle.
After a close shot from Mariners midfielder Patrick McLaughlin, Coalville Town broke out and created their first chance of the game with forward Ben Saunders having a shot from the edge of the box that had Grimsby keeper James McKeown scrambling across his goal.
There were few opportunities for the visitors in the first half as it was dominated mostly by Grimsby who continued to fire shots Coalville’s keeper Sean Bowles goal. However of the 11 shots Grimsby had in the first half not one of them was on target.
Towards the end of the first half Grimsby pushed for the first goal and forward Andy Cook managed to break free of his marker to fire in a shot that was brilliantly deflected out for a corner by Coalville defender Cameron Stuart. From the resulting corner Bowles struggled to get his hands on the ball, after a mad scramble Coalville managed to get the ball clear as the referee blew for half time.
Coalville Town started the second half the better side and within two minutes of the restart they tested McKeown twice but the Mariners keeper managed to keep out both efforts.
It was in the 63rd minute when Grimsby finally managed the breakthrough a quick one two on the edge of the box between the influential McLaughlin and Paul Bignot allowed the latter to cross to the far post where Dayle Southwell controlled and calmly slotted under the advancing Bowles.
Although Grimsby had much more possession the inability to put away chances nearly cost them when a cross from Coalville winger Reece Lester resulted in Anthony Carney heading onto the crossbar.
Knowing a 1-0 lead wasn’t enough Grimsby pushed forward and with 15 minutes to go Joe Colbeck broke out on the left and crossed perfectly for Southwell to score his second with a header guided in to the right corner of the goal.
As Coalville went in search of a consolation in injury time substitute Paul Walker played in Southwell who fired over Bowles for his hat trick.
After the game Grimsby boss Paul Hurst praised his youthful side.
“The youth players that came in tonight did a great job. With all due respect this game wasn’t as important as the league and the FA cup match on Saturday, but nonetheless it was pleasing to progress to the next round.” He said.
