A new report by environment specialsts, Scape, has found that over 150 schools are needed in the East Midlands by 2020.
The numbers are based around Department of Education statistics with 52,000 new pupils expected in the region over the next four years.
The East Midlands is among the lowest growth figures with regions like London and the East of England needing more than double this number.
The new schools in the East Midlands will be built by construction companies G F Tomlinson, Ashe Construction, Woodhead Group, Jeakins Weir and Wates.
In the report, Mark Robinson, the Chief Executive of Scape, said: “As our rising birth rate and migration cause our primary population to surge, we must also prepare for the growing numbers of secondary school pupils which will inevitably follow.
It is more important than ever that school-building is prioritised, and local authorities must be given the freedom and resources to get on with the task at hand.”
The chief executive believes the Brexit decision has made the figures hard to predict: “The brexit bombshell has injected an extra dose of uncertainty at a critical moment.”
Construction to accommodate an 8% growth in pupils in the East Midlands has already started.
