After advancing through their group undefeated, Lincoln United WFC will face Peterborough United LFC – top of the EMWRFL Premier Division in the Trevor Clifton Trophy this Sunday.

Peterborough United finished second in their Trevor Clifton Trophy group, losing 3-0 to Northampton Town who went through at the top.

Despite being in a league lower, Lincoln United are filled with confidence. They’ve faced three teams in the league above this season, winning by a combined aggregate of 24-1.

The Whites manager, Chris Funnell, said: “My expectations are to go there and win the game. We have shown that we have the capabilities to beat anyone in and around our level.

“Naturally it’s a tough game with Peterborough United being top of the league above. If we don’t concede, we are going to win the game. No one has been able to stop us from scoring yet.”

After both sides saw their 2020/21 seasons cancelled, they began an application process to be promoted. Lincoln United WFC are yet to drop a point in the EMWRFL (East Midlands Women’s Regional Football League) Division 1 North since 2019, operating under the name of Hykeham Town Women.

Posh Ladies found themselves top of the table last season, 13 points clear. This was before the initial COVID-19 outbreak saw their season cancelled. However, this year it was much closer at the end, with Loughborough Students Women’s First one point behind the Posh Ladies. Through their six games they totalled four wins, a draw and a loss. Lincoln United found themselves second with a game-in-hand. They had won all four of their league games, tallying a goal difference of 30 in their short-lived season, which was cancelled in April.

Funnell confirmed he will have a full squad to choose from in the cup tie, with two players battling knocks.

“The knocks will be assessed later in the week, as late as possible. The two players are Tracey [Duxbury-Mead] and Heather [Pettit] and given their importance to our team, we will look to make a decision on them as late as possible.”

Speaking ahead of the quarter final, centre-back Steph Powell said: ” We are excited heading into the latter stages of this competition. It is great, despite decisions to null & void the league season, to still have something to play for.”

The game will be played at the Idverde Training Ground in Peterborough, kicking off at 2pm on Sunday, May 16, with the semi-final drawn and played the following week.
