Lincoln Indoor Bowls Club, one of the UK’s largest, want to entice new members and have a positive influence on the community.
Lincoln and District Indoor Bowling Club regularly boasts over a thousand active members, making them not only one of the biggest bowls club in Lincolnshire, but in the whole of England. Aside from just bowls, the club also hosts events such as live music nights and social community events.
Claire Erwin, assistant manager at the club, believes the clubs size and growth has had a positive effect on the wider community.
“We are, as a club, more about the community in general.” She said.
“The club provides a place where people can go, if someone is on their own or has been recently widowed for example, or if they are simply looking for a new hobby.”
Lynne Horton, a Lincolnshire bowls player, said that the promotion of bowls as a sport will open it up to people of all age ranges. Currently, their membership ranges from 5 years to 100 years. But most of the members are aged 60 and above.
“The more you get bowls out there the more people you will get playing.” She said.
“It’s a sport for everyone to enjoy, not just people that are of a certain age.”
The continual growth of the club has allowed them to produce a plethora of teams to compete in competitions and be the host location of national championships also.
