Lincoln City and Grimsby Town have clashed in a game with a difference.

The very first eSports event in Lincoln was recently held at the University’s Isaac Newton Building. ESports, short for electronic gaming, is an organised competition with video games. Supporters of Lincoln City and Grimsby Town competed against each other in a FIFA 18 tournament for the right to represent their club as an official eSports player.

After a knockout tournament, Jacob Bennett was selected for Lincoln City and Ben Sharpe for Grimsby Town.

The first eSports match between the two clubs then commenced with the Mariners defeating the Imps 2-0.

The Lincolnshire clubs are ahead of the curve with Manchester City and West Ham being the only other English sides to have an eSports team.

There was a special appearance from Lincoln City’s Sean Long who helped with the charity raffle. Along with signed shirts donated by both teams, one of the prizes was a chance to play him at FIFA 18.

Ben Bonner and his business partner, Matt McAllister launched their brand eSports Championships in August last year with the hope of growing competitive video gaming across the UK. Outside of the big cities like London, eSports events are few and far between for British gamers.

LSJ reporter Will Gill has bee speaking to the organiser of the event Ben Bonner to find out more.
