Residents of Lincoln have the right to graze a single horse on a patch of land that is owned by the Lincoln County Council.
Horses can be kept by members of the Lincoln community on the South Common and West Common which is on Witham Valley Country Park subject to a yearly fee of £43.
The animal protection licence looks after the animals and you can apply for your horse to be kept on the Commons through the County Council Website.
The South Commons are popular for allowing the animals to graze in a large beautiful enclosure where people can roam and enjoy the views, whilst the West Commons is more for retired horses left to relax.
With enough space to run and get sufficient exercise, some horses are even friendly enough to touch.
Duncan Hall, the Commons Warden goes around on a dirt bike provided by the Lincoln County Council to keep an eye on the area and works alongside the Urban Rangers.
“There is always someone from the County Council roaming the area so it’s always safe,” he said.
The £43 fee covers the costs for registration and branding of the horse.
“So it’s actually sort of free to put your horse on here,” Mr Hall said.
