Lincoln’s Christmas Market has been cancelled due to severe weather conditions.

The Market was due to open at 4pm on Thursday at the castle. However Lincoln City Council has made the decision to cancel the event over concerns for the safety of visitors and stall-holders.

The Christmas Market is a mainstay in the calendar of Lincoln, and the cancellation of the event will take its toll on Lincoln’s economy. The event was expected to provide a welcome boost of £10 million to the city.

The Council made its announcement at lunchtime on Wednesday, following a meeting with its partners.

The event’s mascot, Jingle the elf, has also expressed his disappointment on Twitter, saying “unfortunately we’ve had to cancel the Lincoln Christmas Market due to severe weather. We’re really disappointed but safety is our priority.

“We’re all devastated, the team worked so hard to get things ready but there was no alternative but to take the sensible decision to cancel.”
