The Apple TV+ production directed by Ridley Scott and staring Oscar-winner Joaquin Phoenix will depict Napoleon’s rise to power through the lens of his volatile relationship with Empress Josephine.
Phoenix will take the lead role of Napoleon Bonaparte, with Empress Josephine being played by Venessa Kirby after the British actress replaced Jodie Comer who bowed out due to COVID-19-related scheduling issues.
Shooting will take place at Lincoln Cathedral with site preparation having started yesterday and will finish Wednesday, March 16. Road closures and parking restrictions are now in place at the Cathedral and in surrounding areas.
Scott, Phoenix, Kirby and the rest of the actors and crew will start filming between 7am and 7pm on Thursday, March 17, and Friday March 18.
Darren Scales a feature film producer and Senior Lecturer of Film Production at the University of Lincoln hopes that this will be the start of new renaissance for Lincoln.
He said, “It’s big for the county, certainly Lincoln. The city, especially the Castle and Cathedral quarters, has been used for period type films before. It’s a strength and good for Lincoln.
“I remember few years back we had Ron Howard directing Tom Hanks and Sir Ian McKellen, now we have Ridley Scott and Joaquin Phoenix. It’s definitely something to get excited for.”
Mr Scales added, “There’s definitely a move within the creative industries in the UK to push the film industry outside of London and Lincoln is an outstanding example.”
“Let’s see how the local authorities and people of Lincoln accommodate it and perhaps this will be the start of a new renaissance for us in Lincoln.”
