The game between Boston Town and Deeping Rangers was abandoned this evening following a potentially serious injury suffered by Rangers’ midfielder Scott Bogusz.
The incident occurred in the 60th minute, when Bogusz appeared to land awkwardly on his neck following an innocuous looking challenge with Matt Kennedy. Paramedics were called to the scene soon afterwards and Bogusz was taken to hospital by ambulance, but by this point the referee had taken the decision to abandon proceedings.
The match was level at 1-1 prior to the injury, with Boston taking the lead in the first half before Deeping equalised early in the second.
Both teams were in good spirits coming into the game, with promotion chasing Deeping needing a win to close the gap at the top of the table to just one point; whilst Boston were full of confidence following their convincing 4-0 victory over fellow strugglers Sileby.
The opening ten minutes were a frantic affair, with both teams trying to stamp their authority on the game. Yet despite Deeping being the better side in the early stages, it was the home side who took a surprise lead on 11 minutes.
Scrappy play in the middle of the pitch saw the ball break to Matt Kennedy on the right wing, who cut inside and hit a tame shot from 20 yards that squirmed underneath Deeping goalkeeper James Doughty.
The goal energized Boston, and they wasted two good chances to extend their advantage soon after the opener, with centre back Luke Wilson nodding narrowly over from a corner before striker Josh Ford muscled his way into the box before blazing his shot wide.
Most of Rangers’ attacking threat came from the physical presence of Alex Beck, and the big striker played a part in their best chance of the half. After bringing down a long ball, he played it out to winger Josh Morman whose crossed picked out Mitchell Griffiths, but his tame effort was easily saved.
The game threatened to boil over, with a number of hard tackles being put in by both sides causing uproar amongst the opposition benches.
The half ended with a good chance for Boston to double their lead, when goal scorer Kennedy was presented with a one-on-one chance after a lobbed ball over the Deeping backline. Goalkeeper Doughty made amends for his earlier blunder, saving well from the winger’s fierce drive.
