Over 350 million people suffer from depression in the UK each year.
The University of Lincoln is encouraging students to think positively and express their thoughts out loud.
The overall aim of the day is to encourage governments and civil society around the world to address depression as a widespread illness that affects individuals of all ages, their families and their peers, and to recognise that it is a treatable condition.
Each year the theme of the day is changed; and this year the theme is ‘Depression: A Global Crisis’. This highlights that access to treatment is not always simple. In some countries fewer than 10% of those who need it receive treatment.
Carol Birch, a member of the university’s Councilling Team spoke to LSJ News about the aims of the day. She said;
”We want people to come in and think positively about things, not always questioning actions negatively. It needs to be done. We want people to approach us and be able to answer what they have done today so far that makes them feel good about themselves.”
