Young apprentices will be teaming up with the Alzheimer’s Society this week, as part of national apprenticeship week.
The scheme, organised by the National Apprenticeship Service will be getting apprentices out into the community, talking to carers and sufferers of the disease as well as the public to help raise awareness of dementia. Council leaders will also be joining in by spending a day in the life of an apprentice. They will be taking part in activities such as digging flowerbeds and fixing electrical problems. The scheme focuses on bringing together members of the council with their community to make a difference and raise money for a worthy cause.
This fundraising initiative is taking place at a good time, as figures out today have revealed that research into Alzheimers is grossly short of funding. It has been shown in a report from the Alzheimer’s Research Trust that dementia actually costs the economy twice as much as cancer, but gets a twelfth of the funding. This means that raising funds and awareness about the disease is really important, in finding a cure.
