The religious community in Lincoln is growing with the building of a new mosque. We went along to Friday Prayer to get some more insight about the new building.
The Islamic Association of Lincoln is a registered charity that represents the Islamic community in Lincoln and their objectives are to promote and increase the awareness of Islam, for example with the building of a new mosque. They have already raised £1,3 million and only need just under £300,000 more to complete the project. The association hopes the new mosque in the Boultham Park area can be finished in late 2016.
Back in 1980, there were only a few Muslim families living in Lincoln but the community has steadily grown ever since. So much that the current mosque on Orchard Street is way too small and the Islamic Association of Lincoln can only use the Lincoln Grandstand Community Centre once a week for Friday Prayer.
That’s why the association started to plan the building of a new mosque in 2006 financed with private donations. In July 2008 the City Council gave planning permission and ever since the structure have been growing steadily. The latest update is that the brickwork on the building has begun on April 18.
When complete the two-storey building will be over a thousand square meters with praying facilities for men and women, have a community centre, an education centre, funeral services, and a library.
Our reporter Niels Hofma went along to Friday Prayer at the Grandstand Community Centre to speak to a member of the Islamic Association of Lincoln about their new home.
