Non-League restructure confirmed: Gainsborough Trinity to remain in Northern Premier League next season

The Lincolnshire side have remained in their step seven division ahead of the 2021/22 season despite a re-shuffle of teams across Non-League, the Northern Premier League have confirmed.

Gainsborough Trinity chairman, Richard Kane (above), says he hopes his side can achieve a play-off placed finish next season.

Due to the disruption caused by the Coronavirus pandemic, two consecutive seasons were voided, forcing Non-League to be restructured for the next campaign.

In total, 110 clubs gained promotions, with three new divisions being created to accommodate these changes.

However, for Gainsborough Trinity in step 3 of Non-League, there has been no change in the sides who will be lining up for the 2021/22 season.

The Holy Blues’ chairman, Richard Kane, says he hoped there would be alterations made to the division due to financial and travel issues.

“There is always going to be teams in there that you would like to get rid of,” he said. “South Shields being one of them because they’ve got too much money; it’s also a long way for us to go.

“It would be nice to pick and choose, but unfortunately I don’t think I’ll ever get that luxury to say, ‘I don’t want South Shields.’”

Regardless of who they play, Trinity supporter, Will Stanser, says he is looking forward to being able to watch his side again.

Trinity supporter, Will Stanser (pictured), says he is most looking forward to travelling to Morpeth away.

“About 90% of my life is football so it will be great to get back to supporting the team again,” he said.

“I’ll be happy with a top-half finish, but anything can happen in football.”
