There is just one week left until the Lincolnshire Sports Awards 2012, where the county’s greatest sports achievers will be recognised and celebrated.
45 nominees have been shortlisted for the 16 separate categories that include; sports educator, sports club and sports personality of the year.
The volunteer based organisation runs several sports projects aimed to give young people in the community an opportunity to excel. Sports Development volunteer, Alice Carter, believes that Off the Bench do more than just deliver coaching sessions.
“I think we try to offer sport and something else; we try and get to know the young people, offer them support, guidance, really take the time to find out what their hopes and aspirations are,” she said.
The organisation will be going up against Lincolnshire Netball Management Board, who were also nominated last year, and the University of Lincoln Student’s Union but Alice thinks Off the Bench stand a good chance.
“We’ve done a lot of work this year, reached a lot of young people and I think we’ve made a real difference. Just to be nominated in the top three for the whole of Lincolnshire is a real proud achievement for us,” she said.
In Alice’s eyes the ‘Sports Woman of the Year’ category is the one to watch, with successful nominees such as Georgie Twigg and Lincoln Ladies’ Casey Stoney making it a tough call.
The annual ceremony, hosted this year by John Inverdale, is set to take place at the Lincolnshire Events Centre on Thursday 8th November.
