Steve Housham’s Lincoln United picked up a surprise 2-1 home defeat to bottom of the league Wisbech Town.
The home side opened the scoring very early in the game, but the visitors, a side that had failed to win any of their last seven league games, turned things round to win at a windy Sun Hat Villas and Resorts Stadium.
The Whites were awarded a penalty in the third minute after Wisbech
defender Jack Keeble handled the ball whilst making a slide tackle in his box.
Midfielder Johnathan Williams stuck the penalty away in the bottom left to put his side 1-0 up.
Following the opener, neither side succeeded in taking control of possession, with the ball played long by both defences in the difficult conditions.
Kallum Smith looked dangerous down the left for Lincoln in the first half, with quick feet
beating opposition players, however nobody capitalised on the chances he tried to create.
An early Wisbech freekick to the left of the Lincoln penalty area was not taken advantage of, the ball delivered too deep into the box.
Shortly after, Reon Benjamin-Potts was played through one-on-one with the keeper, but he blazed the ball over the bar, failing to double the home sides lead.
The Whites were forced into a substitution late in the first half, with defender Mark Gray
going off with what looked like a hamstring injury.
Steve Housham reshuffled his side, bringing on Elliot Wilson and dropping Kallum Smith to right-back.
Lincoln United went into the half-time break with their lead still intact.
The second half began with a scare for Whites goalkeeper Tiernan Brooks, as he misjudged
a bouncing ball, just about managing to throw himself onto it, stopping it rolling over the
goal line.
The game was changed by Wisbech winger, Tiago Nassunculo, cutting in from the right and playing a ball through the Lincoln defence to striker Jordan Macleod, who slotted it past the keeper, bringing the scores level.
Lincoln had chances to re-take the lead. Kallum Smith blazed a shot over the bar from
outside the area, after it fell to him from a corner and Benjamin-Potts failed to finish off
good link-up play between himself and substitute Elliot Wilson.
Nassunculo continued to cause problems for Wisbech, in both wide areas and drifting inside from the right. With twelve minutes remaining, he cut inside and shot low to the keepers right, which Tiernan Brooks was able to push wide for a corner.
He then recreated his assist for the first goal, this time feeding Layton Maddison who ran onto the ball from midfield, and finished past Brooks, putting the away side 2-1 up.
Wisbech held on for the remaining few minutes, preventing Lincoln from creating chances
and cleverly retaining possession in the home side’s half to earn the three points.
Wisbech climb a place to nineteenth in the Bet Victor Northern Premier South East division, three places below Lincoln United in 16th.
