New ‘prettiest street’ title for Steep Hill

Steep Hill has been named this week as one of Britain’s prettiest streets, according to The Telegraph.

Lincoln’s most famous cobbled street is just one of ten to be deemed ‘pretty’ by the paper.

Michael Shanks, a chef at Pizza Express on Steep Hill said: “It’s quite nice to be near to the street because it’s a tourist attraction, so we get people flooding in, coming for the street and  wanting to eat something.”

He also said: “For someone coming in to Lincoln, it’s quite nice to look at – you’ve got the trees and the cobbles still on the hill. But for someone who lives here, it’s also quite nice to walk up on of a morning and get a view of the whole city.”

Lined by Norman houses and home to Britain’s oldest Jewish synagogue, the street has a one-in-seven gradient at its steepest.
