Supermarket chain ASDA has said it will not be taking part in Black Friday this year after a shopper revolt over the    pre-Christmas sales day sparked ugly brawls last year. The American Walmart-owned store introduced the Black Friday event into the UK back in 2013, but has said that this year they will be investing £26 million pounds worth of investment in long- term sales rather than festive deals which caused fights across their stores last year.

Black Friday usually takes place on the Friday following the American celebration of Thanksgiving but some shops actually started sales on the 23rd of November, the Monday before.

The supermarket chains decision is the first by a major retailer to move away from taking part in Black Friday sales, an event now widely considered as a permanent and almost inevitable fixture in the UK’s retail calendar.
