Sleaford Town defeated Wisbech 1-0 on Saturday, to give Nathan Arnold his first win in charge of the Greens.

In early November, Sleaford Town appointed former Lincoln City and Grimsby star, Nathan Arnold as joint manager to work alongside Tom Ward. Ahead of the Wisbech encounter, Sleaford were in desperate need of a result, having lost their last three league games.

Also suffering from a bad run of form, Wisbech’s last league win came against Sleaford, when they hammered the Greens 6-1 back in September.

Before kick-off, players and fans held a minute’s silence for Armistice Day.

Once play got underway, both sides failed to give each other an inch as they both jostled for possession.

The first real chance of the game fell to Sleaford’s Shaun Harrad, who fired his strike narrowly wide of the goal after being released by Akeel Francis.

The Greens broke the deadlock in the 38th minute, when Jacob Fenton’s lofted corner was met by captain Charlie Ward, who directed a stunning diving header towards the bottom left corner, giving the home side the lead.

The last chance of the half fell to Fenton, whose close range header was blocked by Wisbech’s Max Mattless.

Sleaford retained control in the second half, suppressing Wisbech’s live wire, Toby Allen.

The home side had several chances to wrap up the win, however, Dan George denied Rushen with an outstanding save, before two superb blocks by Harry Twite stopped Fenton and Francis from adding a second.

After making his 50th appearance for the club, Sleaford’s Kyle Watkins gave his post-match thoughts.

“It was good to get back to winning ways and good to put right the result from the reverse fixture. I think we dominated the game, didn’t look like conceding, and on another day we score four or five.”

The Greens joint manager, Tom Ward also commented on the victory. “With the aspirations we always have, winning games is what we’re here for, so great result and a good performance.”
