How Lincoln City Women have fared so far in the FA Cup

Lincoln City Women are on the verge of reaching a new club milestone when they face Northampton Town LFC in the third round of the FA Cup.

A win would see them reach the fourth round for the first time in their history. They would also earn the opportunity to potentially face a team from the Women’s Super League, the highest national tier.

The game will kick off at 2pm this Sunday at Moorlands Sports & Social Club.

Thanks to a 3-2 victory in round two over league rivals Leafield Athletic, in which City trailed by two with 30 minutes left, the Imps already made history just by advancing to the third round for the first time.

Ben Cartwright, media officer, said: “From a media standpoint, it allows the club to bring in new followers and supporters from across the country.”

He added: “The club works tirelessly to ensure that the players have the best facilities in the league. We have physios, rehabilitation staff, amazing training facilities, and a back-room staff of dedicated professionals.”

Despite entering uncharted territory, Lincoln City can approach this game confidently given that they play an entire league above their fifth-tier opposition.

Lee Mitchell, manager, said: “Of course everybody is fully aware of what the next round means. But we put that to the back of our minds because you can’t think of anything like that until the job is done.

“Yes, they’re a league below us and on paper, people might look and say that you should win. But football isn’t played on paper and the FA Cup is all about upsets.

“We have a great coaching staff and we’re very experienced. So, we don’t take anybody lightly. We know who they’ve played, and we watched clips we’ve been able to get our hands on.”

As far as their league campaign goes, Lincoln also have high ambitions.

“Promotion is an obvious objective, and it looks as though we could achieve that. After that, the sky’s the limit.” Mr Cartwright said.

Mr Mitchell added: “There’s no easy games in our league. But we want to be competitive. We want to be serious contenders for promotion.”
