In a country where 455 deaths have been attributed to opiate abuse in the last year, a suitable treatment for addiction is a priority. Methadone is one of those treatments. However the controversial treatment has faced a lot of opposition in recent years, with many of said complainants arguing that prescribing methadone is simply trading one addiction for another.
The duration of methadone maintenance therapy can be for months or even years. Here in lies the problem, as all too often subjects of this form of therapy end up with a serious dependence on the drug.
Methadone maintenance treatment (MMT) has been the ‘gold standard’ treatment for illicit opiate dependence for over 30 years. However the quality of existing MMT research and evidence for its general effectiveness are limited. So we ask the question, is methadone a gold standard treatment or state funded addiction?
