Shoplifting is costing Europe billions

European retailers are said to be spending £4.4 billion pounds on the damage from shoplifting.

According to a survey from the European Retailers, one third of thefts are even carried out by the shop staff themselves. The main target seems to be branded clothes.

The retail security company, Checkpoint Security, for whom the survey was carried out, found that just over £12 million pounds worth of goods were stolen every day over a twelve month period.

As shocking as it seems, the cost of shoplifting in the UK has dropped by 5.8% since last year. Some would say this is due to the £970 million pounds spent on increased security in 2009.
