A local woman from Lincolnshire will be one of the many people running on Sunday 17 April in Lincoln’s annual 10k race for charity, but it will be her idol that will be part of the motivation to finish in good time.
Su Roys, 38, from Gainsborough is taking is taking part in the run this year for her second time. Su is a massive Gary Barlow fan and it’s the singers song The Garden that has inspired her to compete.
On Sunday she will be wearing her much loved Gary Barlow t-shirt to motivate her and inspire her to finish in good time.
Initially Su’s aim was to lose weight and the run was a way of doing that.
“Running was a way of me losing a fair bit of weight really cheaply. I could’ve gone to a gym and paid the £30 a month and done it that way but I’m lucky that I live near the Chesterfield tow path so I used to go running there.”
The event attracted just under 5,000 runners last year including Lincolnshire residents as well as many others from across the country.
Su has been training since January for the event and uses the run as a goal to work towards.
She said: “It was on my bucket list and after I finished my first 10k last year I got to the end and I was buzzing.”
Last year Su helped raise funds for Tommy’s Stillbirth charity. This year she has chosen to fund-raise for the Lily Foundation who research mitochondrial diseases, which is an inherited chronic illness that can be present at birth or develop later in life.
“Its making a positive contribution to society. If people weren’t going out and doing things like running for charity, then charities would be in a real state,” said Su.
Although Su doesn’t compete in fancy dress, all kinds of wacky costumes can be seen at the event. Su has seen men dressed up as school-girls, teddy bears and firemen dressed as Fireman Sam.
