For many university sport students, induction means only one thing. As it is more familiarly known, ‘initiation’ involves daring activities organised by group leaders, and can be taken quite seriously by some.
This annual tradition is held at the start of each university season, and socials’ captains can spend hours planning the event. Many teams start the evening at Lincoln’s local bars and restaurants, leading through the town on an organised pub crawl. A popular finishing destination is the university’s Engine Shed, where this year a ‘Beach Party’ theme was in full swing.

Amongst the array of board shorts and bikinis, there were some more unusual fancy dress outfits. Lincoln Jets chose a ‘Princess and the Frog’ theme – new members to the cheerleading team dressed in green whilst the existing Jets were pretty in pink. The university’s Hockey Club were noticeable in their yellow and red lifeguard gear, and the Badminton Club rolled in as cops and robbers.
As much as this is an enjoyable event for all involved, there are always mixed reactions to the games and drinking that go hand in hand with initiation.
