A “Heart in a Jar” event will take place in Lincoln on Saturday as part of a Valentines Day celebration with a twist. The event, which will take place at Gotham Games Asylum, will involve the preservation of a pigs heart.

All materials are included and those partaking in the event will be able to take their heart home on the very same day. Tickets are now on sale for £30.

Host of the event, Suzie Li Wan Po, said: “Once everyone has learnt about the process and how it works they’re given a pigs heart, as it’s most similar in size and function to a humans. Some like to cut it in half to show the internal anatomy, etc. To make the class a bit more “fun” they’re able to decorate the jar however they like. For example as it’s a class for Valentine’s people have been attaching little messages for their partners.”

Miss Po, who runs the business Suzie Li Taxidermy has been specialising in bespoke and custom made pieces using ethically sourced animals for years. The animal remains involved in the process all originate from animals that have died from natural causes.

Hannah Riley, a Lincoln resident who will be attending the event, said: “I’ve been attending Suzie’s classes since last June, but always been interested in animals, even after death. My house features small collections of animal bones – some found out and about in the wild, and others I kept after dissection classes. Taxidermy seemed like the next logical step.

“Preserved body parts in jars is just really a follow-on from that. Anatomy fascinates me as a whole, and I’m an avid crafter (knitting, sewing, painting…), so putting the two together is a way of consolidating two interests into one.”

Lincoln will be celebrating Valentines Day with its usual annual festivities such as the #LoveLincoln trail. The heart in a jar event however is new to the city and has so far only been completed by one previous group on 8 February.
