Cost of living in Lincoln at a record all time high

Families are being urged to eat healthily despite a soaring cost of living, coupled with a rise in food costs due to the war in Ukraine.

The inflation rate in the United Kingdom has increased to 6.2% this month, which is the highest recorded rate since March 1992.

The National Farm Union (NFU) has warned that food prices will continue to rise due to the Ukraine war.

According to the NFU, almost 30% of the world’s wheat comes from Ukraine and Russia, meaning many food products will be more expensive this year. This has fuelled concerns about access to cheap and healthy foods.

But nutritionist Geoff Middleton believes that people should be selecting their grocery items carefully and should be looking to eliminate waste to combat the rise in living costs. He said:

“There is a myth that a healthy diet is more expensive when actually it isn’t.

“You should get to know your area and know your local shops to see where the best value is.”

Middleton insists that shopping at your local grocery store can save families a lot of money, he said: “Accessing products like fruits and vegetables is not expensive, so you need to get your timing right and your source.”

Healthier options such as fruit and veg that Geoff Middleton believes can combat the rise in living costs.

With the rise in food costs, food banks in Lincoln may face increased pressure.

Dr Sarah Chaudhary, who works for the Lincolnshire Food Partnership, said: “It’s almost inevitable that there will be a rise in demand for food banks, but they are extremely limited by the donations and grants that they receive.”
