Guy Fawkes and the War on Terror

Bonfire night, a night for revelry and tradition, is upon us once again. Most of us will be familiar with the story of Guy Fawkes’ plot to blow-up the Houses of Parliament. Following the Protestant Reformation, Europe was in turmoil; torn apart by religious wars. The conspirators were Roman Catholics seeking to destroy the person and the government of the Stuart King, James I; a committed Protestant.

The similarities to terrorism today are more surprising however. These links are explored by Richard Bell, and Professor Cairo Hickman, History lecturer at the University of Lincoln.
